The
monotype occupies a place between the graphic arts and
painting, the proof being unique and not identical. The monotype is an original
painting produced in a variety of methods by the use of printing inks, linoleum
transfers, paint stick, fiber dyes and stencils which is done on a sheet
of Plexiglas. Dampened paper is placed on a plate and it is put through
a press. The image is then transferred onto the paper. This method can be
combined in a two step process whereby the paper is printed in the drypoint
technique and then the usual monotype is registered onto the paper at a
later printing.
